08 Jan Multiple robberies spark concern for residents in popular Charlotte neighborhood
CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Plaza Midwood neighbors say they’ve noticed an increase in crime and don’t know why.
“It’s more brazen and a bit more clever," said Andy Leicester, a 15-year resident of Plaza Midwood.
Leicester recently opened a business, Daily Mews Cat Cafe, in Plaza Midwood because he loves the area, but is concerned about the increase in crime he’s noticed recently.
“Back door kicked in, urgent alert, I mean this is a lot of stuff," said Leicester as he read crime postings from his cell phone.
Jay Thomas says he has lived in his Plaza home for seven years and noticed the same thing.
“Just recently I’ve noticed an uptick in crime, specifically break ins," said Thomas.
A crime map from CMPD’s resource on crime mapping shows that there were 44 incidents of larceny, burglary and car theft in Sept. 2018 in the Plaza Midwood area.
In the past month, 77 incidents of the same sort have been recorded, and 35 of those were burglaries.
“It doesn’t make me feel good, it makes me feel a little less safe than we normally feel," said Thomas.
“My wife’s car was broken into and then spoke to some neighbors and quickly discovered there had been 3 cars stolen on the street literally on our block in the past week," said Leicester.
“I just want to know what’s going on and when is it going to stop," said Thomas. “When can I breathe easier? I think we all want to know that.”
